BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE
My name is Marianne Tan. I am an Elementary Education major with a minor in Special Education. I am originally from a northeast suburb of Chicago called Waukegan, which is located on the shore of Lake Michigan.
Ever since I can remember, I have always had the desire to become a teacher. Throughout my experiences in life, I developed a love of learning, reading, and eager growth in faith and service. This translated into a deep yearning to share this love and naturally followed my inclination to major in Education. It was logical for me to take that step, because I come from a family of teachers. My mother homeschooled us, my grandmother was an elementary teacher in the Philippines, and my grandfather was also involved in education back in the Philippines where they immigrated from. I started out at my local community college back home. After two years, I found the University of Mary and fell in love with the community, particularly the faith aspect and its support of the growth of faith. So I transferred and have enjoyed and grown so much in every experience I have had at the University of Mary.
The Education classes at the University of Mary have aided me in developing my pedagogical skills as well as helping me grow into a well-rounded person. I had the pleasure of becoming involved in several schools in the Bismarck, North Dakota area. The rich atmosphere at the University of Mary has fueled my purpose in spreading the light of love and knowledge not only to my students but to everyone I meet and encounter in my journeys through life. I have developed a love of history and love reading historical fiction. I would like to pass this on to my future students. I am also passionate about reading and am hoping to pursue a Reading Credential in the future. Lastly, because of my experience of diversity from home and even in Bismarck, I would like to utilize this knowledge in my future teaching career.
